Liberia: Nancy Doe Cries Foul

Former First Lady, Mrs. Nancy B. Doe has accused Transport Minister Jackson E. Doe of 'criminally' taking into his possession her late husband's will.

Mrs. Doe stated that Minister Doe is not a relative of the late President Samuel K. Doe and that he is surreptitiously operating nationally and internationally as the legitimate representative of the late President Samuel Doe's family.

In a letter to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf dated June 20, 2008, Mrs. Doe said Minister Doe had taken into his personal use important documents including various bank accounts, the family will and several deeds of real estate properties in and out of the country.

She said Minister Doe personally took those items from the room of the late President at the Executive Mansion during the heat of the civil war, with the understanding that he was taking them to her.

Mrs. Doe told President Sirleaf, "I am asking you to please come to my help and stop Mr. Doe who is trying to get away with all the benefits of the late President intended for the family."

She appealed to President Sirleaf to help put a hold on all financial transactions Minister Doe may be undertaking secretly including various bank accounts, buildings and the purchase of houses in Liberia and abroad.

Mrs. Doe said Minister Doe used his position during the Gyude Bryant's Administration to obtain a letter of administration on behalf of the Doe family from the court and got some huge sum of money from a bank in Switerzerland.

She stated further that Minister Doe used the money to purchase a house in New York between 2004 and 2006.

The former First Lady emphatically said that Minister Doe is not a relative of the late President Doe.

"The late President has only one brother, who was Chayea Doe. Chayea Doe died in 2005. Jackson Doe was promoted politically by my late husband as his brother because they were all from the same town as extended family members"

She stressed that the two men were born from two separate Doe families with no direct relationship.

Mrs. Doe informed President Sirleaf that Minister Doe admitted having the documents in question and requested US$165,000 before returning them to her.

"Operating in good faith, I decided to honor his request and gave him the requested amount. After receiving the said amount, he refused to honor his promise," Mrs. Doe disclosed.

She said, "It was Mr. Jackson Doe who gave me my daughter's bank book and the driving license of my late husband. These were in the same brief-case that contained other important documents in question."

The former first lady who appeared dejected during a chat with the INQUIRER said currently her children are not in school because their 'family will' and other financial documents are being personalized by Minister Doe.

In a release issued on Saturday, Mrs. Doe said Jackson Doe is not the head of the Does and that it is disheartening that people can be discussing reconciliation with the Doe family while she, as head of the family is left out.

She said presently all entitlements for the Doe family are being passed on to Minister Jackson Doe who is heading a different Doe family instead of her and the children of the late President.

Mrs. Doe commended the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process, saying " I thank God for the TRC; no one was going to say anything about my late husband's death. It is through the TRC Hearing that brought about the story and for the holding of a memorial service for him.

"In addition, I Mrs. Nancy B. Doe who is the head of the late President Doe's family is not part of the ongoing reconciliation process between Senator Prince Y. Johnson and the Jackson E.Doe led Doe Family." She said.

When Minister Jackson Doe was contacted to respond to Mrs. Doe's allegation, he confirmed that the letter to President Sirleaf was written on June 20, saying, "You know I am a decent person who is not involved in any act of criminality."

He promised to see the President through her Press Secretary following which he would address himself to the issue at an elaborate press conference.

From my point of view, the former first lady has all rights to appeal to the president of Liberia for her intervention in this matter. The late president Doe was her husband;not her boyfreind, so she is still the head of what ever late President left for them. Minister Jackson Doe being a blood brother to the late president still don't have right to make decision on her behalf.

Well, as a concern non Grand Gedean. How is Nancy Doe disgracing herself? She is trying to claim what is rightfully her's and her children. She is doing what she is suppose to as a mother and wife. So Mr. "STUPID" think before you write crap that has nothing to do with the question. As a mother and wife Mrs. Nancy Doe have every right to claimed her position as Head of the Doe's family and whatever property if Liberia's Justice Department investigate that those property was rightfully gotten by her late husband. Jackson Doe has no rights in claiming any property or money that the late president has. All property financial or real estate goes to the wife and children. Jackson Doe is just a brother and that is all the rights that he gets.

There must be a crisis between the former first lady and her so call brother-in-law. Insodoing, she has the right to her husband properties. It seems like She brought her family's matter to the president because Mr. Jackson Doe is not corporating with her family( Nancy and Children). Don't you think she discussed this issue with her children before bringing it to the president? Look deeper and see what is hurting her feeling.
