Nigeria: Jigawa Lifts Embargo on Medical Employment

10 September 2008

Jigawa State government has lifted the embargo on employment of doctors, surgeons, consultants, pharmacists, laboratory technologists, nurses, midwives and other related health personnel.

Reports say the decision of the state government to lift the embargo followed the dearth of medical personnel that is hindering effective provision of health care services to the people of the state.

Deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Ahmad Mahmoud, made the observation when he received the delegation of National Association of Jigawa State Medical Students (NAJIMS) led by its President, Dr. Abbas Ahmad Danzomo.

The deputy governor, who reiterated the state government's support for indigenous medical students, added that any time they ask for assistance, he will immediately pass it to the state governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido for necessary action.

He then appealed to them to come back home to fill the existing vacancies. He then expressed happiness that 900 Jigawa State indigenes were admitted to read Medicine in Nigerian universities and abroad.

In his speech, Dr. Danzomo said, the association was formed in order to create unity among members and serve their state through community activities.

"Our source of income was through taxing ourselves the sum of N250.00 every month, which we use for running the activities of this association like travelling, logistics , orientation programmes for new students and supporting members with financial needs," he stated.

He added that in the last three years, they have used the resources to conduct community programmes in the state which include guidance and counseling which they organized in different science secondary schools across the state.
