Lagos — Plateau State is known for its high production of the nourishing Irish potato. But for Mrs. Beskeni Rhoda Danjuma, a Chemistry Teacher at the Federal College of Education, Pankshin, the rounded tuber is more than food. It contains electrolytes. Using zinc nail and copper wire as electrode, and two tubers of Irish potato as electrolyte, therefore, she designed a battery that powered a digital clock.

"I was thinking of how to teach Chemistry using locally-sourced materials", says Danjuma, who has taught the subject for 19 years. "This project can be developed on a large scale to produce batteries without using the dangerous materials that we have today."
