Nigeria: Cult - Ebonyi Varsity Dismisses 12, Suspends 7

Lagos — Authorities of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) have rusticated 12 students while seven others were placed on suspension from the institution for their alleged involvement in various offences ranging from cultism, examination malpractice and presentation of fake certificates during admission.

The rustication and suspension order was contained in statement signed by the chief Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the university, Mr. Larry Udu, who stated that the authorities took the measure to tame the rising cases of cultism and other vices and to serve as a deterrent to others.

Udu said: "The authorities of the Institution, said the rusticated students were alleged to be involved in several misdemeanors, which included examination malpractice, fake certificate and cultism.

According to him, those affected include; Nwedeogu Jerldine, Anaya Regina Charles and Nwidiaagu Julian of the Department of Nursing Science, who were expelled for examination malpractice while Okeke Peter and Agbo Uchechukwu Eucharia of Banking and Finance Department were rusticated for result and certificate forgery.

Others who were expelled for fake entry qualification are; Ekoyo Mary Uguru, Department of Science Education; Arih Ann Nneka, Economics Department; Olughu Victor A, Orji Uzoamaka Ogo, Accountancy Department and Elem Loveth Ndidi from the Department of Public Administration.

Udu stated that the institution also confirmed that Wanogho Elliot Mamode was expelled based on his involvement in cultism at the institution.

Others suspended for their involvement in cult activities include; Erim Samuel Ncha, Otozi Uchenna, Anuka Emmanuel and Nwafor Nzube, all from pre-degree programmme.

According to the PRO, those suspended indefinitely for cult activities are Okoli Geoffery (Computer Science), Aja Ude Asu (Industrial Physics) and Utugbu O. Henry (Banking & Finance), while Ifeanyi Nwigberi who has been on suspension for examination misconduct was recalled having completed the suspension period.

The letters of suspension/expulsion signed by the Acting Registrar Mr. Ephraim Okwor directing the affected students to handover, with immediate effect all the University property including the students Identification Card to the Dean, Students Affairs have been issued to them.
