United States-based striker Thabiso Khumalo has joined Major Soccer League side DC United, a club considered as one of the most successful in American soccer.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who starred for Second Division Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the just-ended season, has secured a three-month loan deal with the Washington-based topflight side.
He is now waiting for his work permit, which he hopes will come through before the end of the week.
"Everything is going well for me. I have signed with the team for three months," says an elated Khumalo, adding that he is confident of playing this weekend when the Tom Soehn-coached side takes on FC Dallas on Saturday.
"I did talk to the General Manager (Dave Kasper) and he assured me that my work permit should be here this Friday. Hopefully, I will play at the weekend," he says.
The Soweto-born striker, who had a successful season with Riverhounds, which culminated in him being selected as one of the best 16 players in the USL-2, hopes that kind of form will earn him a more lucrative contract.
"Right now I am on loan, but if I perform well, I might sign with the team next year. It all depends on how good I perform for these couple of months."
Khumalo, who went to United States as a youngster on a scholarship, has played for a number of amateur and lower division clubs, such as Mid-Michigan Bucks, Chicago Fire and Charleston Battery in the US prior to the move to Riverhounds.
After his return to South Africa, he had a stint with Vodacom League side Alexandra United before returning to the US this year.
