Police in Busia are holding a Rwandan national who was arrested in possession of 1,004,600 counterfeit US Dollars, in what appears to be a rising racket of money laundering between Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali and Kinshasha.

Busia District Police Commander Nasur Oringa told Daily Monitor on Tuesday that Mr Jerome Harilimana from Kigali was arrested on Monday while entering Uganda from Kenya. "He was arrested by a joint security team which included the police, URA security officers and CMI who were on a routine security check of passengers entering the country," Mr Oringa said.

Mr Harilimana, holder of Rwandan PassPort Number 030993 was aboard Akamba Bus Registration Number KAR 556 M en-route to Kigali from Nairobi.

The Busia District CID Officer, Mr James Ochen, told Daily Monitor that Mr Harilimana would be taken to court on charges of being in possession of counterfeit currency. His case file number is CBR 1417/2008.

Mr Harilimana's arrest came just five days after security operatives in Busia arrested a Congolese national with 2,100 counterfeit US Dollars and 6.5 counterfeit DRC Currency.

Mr Solongo Mulinga was also arrested by police and security operatives in Busia while entering Uganda from Kenya aboard a Kampala Coach which was also heading to Kigali, Rwanda from Nairobi.

Mr Solongo admitted that he was aware that he was in possession of counterfeit US Dollars and DRC Currency, but insisted that such currency was in use in the DRC.

Mr Oringa said there appeared to be a big racket of such money laundering between Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali and Kinshash, but that the border security officials were working around the clock to curb the vice.
