Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba will say that a vibrant media is the reflection of a functioning democracy, when she speaks at a forum in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso this Friday.
Journalists, civil society representatives and political decision-makers will attend this three day forum on 'Media and Development,' taking place between 11 and 13 September 2008, which is being organised by the commissions of the African Union (AU) and the European Union.
They will discuss the responsibility of the media in disseminating governance issues across Africa, the Commonwealth and the wider international community.
Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Masire-Mwamba will explain how the Commonwealth has supported professional journalism and engaged media partners to deliver its governance programmes, which are central to its mandate.
She will also offer recommendations to the forum on how to build stronger relationships with the media.
