Uganda/Niger: Coach Blames Players' Ignorance

Just a day after slaying his strikers for failing to convert their chances against Niger last Sunday, Cranes coach Bobby Williamson has blamed the players' 'ignorance' for the team's failure to get a point.

The Cranes led 1-0 but eventually fell 1-3 to their hosts in a 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played in Niamey. Bobby told the Fufa weekly press conference yesterday that had the players known the exact result they wanted to remain firm contenders, they would have got it.

"It was horrible seeing most of the players shedding tears after the game. We could have avoided this if the players knew that even a draw was a good result," Williamson said. The Cranes needed at least a point to move above Angola who fell 2-3 to group winners Benin.

"I was disappointed with the reaction of the players after conceding an equaliser. A draw should have been enough but surprisingly they continued pressing further which exposed the team at the back thus conceding those goals," Williamson added. He promised to draft in lead striker Eugene Sseppuuya in their final game against Benin on October 12.
