Uganda: Police Arrest Constructor Over Shoddy Work

The managing director of a construction firm assigned to refurbish Rukungiri's health units has been arrested by the police for allegedly doing shoddy work.

The arrest of the managing director of Creative Construction Company (CCC) only identified as Patel, on Tuesday, was ordered by the Resident District Commissioner, Mr Dan Kaguta. CCC, according to Mr Kaguta, was found making sub-standard blocks for the construction.

The contractors continued with their work, ignoring a directive from Mr Kaguta tostop. They allegedly argued that it is not the RDC who awarded them the contract. "They were mixing soil with cement instead of sand with cement," Mr Kaguta told Daily Monitor shortly after inspection of the site.

CCC was contracted to rehabilitate Nyakagyeme Health Centre III, Rwenshama Health Centre III, Nyakishenyi Health Centre III, Buhunga Health Centre IV and Kebisoni Health Centre IV under the Strategic Support to Health Programme II, which is funded by the African Development Bank

The company, according to the Health State Minister, Dr Richard Nduhura, won the bid after meeting international standards. "When companies do shoddy work, we tell them and they adjust accordingly, but this one has become stubborn," Mr Kaguta said. The Ministry of Health assistant commissioner in-charge of construction could not be reached for a comment.
