Nairobi — More than 160 delegates at a Kanu meeting on Wednesday issued a two-week ultimatum to their national chairman Uhuru Kenyatta to call a national delegate conference to discuss the fate of the party.
The meeting was held at the party's office in Kericho.
The delegates asked Rift Valley Province Kanu representative Gideon Moi to be acting national chairman as they planned for the conference, to be held in Kasarani or Nakuru, after the expiry of the ultimatum.
During the conference, the delegates said they would replace Mr Kenyatta with Mr Moi as the former Baringo Central MP had shown that he had leadership qualities and love for the party.
Doing nothing
At the meeting, the delegates accused Mr Kenyatta of fronting for PNU while doing nothing for Kanu.
The delegates included Kericho Kanu branch secretary William Kettienya, branch chairman Paul Chirchir and vice chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Kiptanui.
Others were Kipkelion branch treasurer Joseph Soi and Bomet chairman Kenut Koske.
They were reacting to remarks by Mr Kenyatta on Monday that Kanu was firmly in PNU, which they said was misleading and personal.
Double standards
"The double standards he has applied are not healthy for Kanu and the sooner he quit as party chairman the better," said Mr Kettienya.
Mr Kettienya said Mr Kenyatta was a lone ranger in Central Province and wanted him to quit as national chairman.
He accused Mr Kenyatta of not consulting on party matters the way the founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, did.
Kanu, the delegates said, was no longer an affiliate of PNU. They said from now on it would handle its matters single-handedly without involving PNU as what happened during last General Election.
