Kampala — NORTHERN Uganda is to benefit from the $10m given by the International Criminal Court (ICC) $10m to assist 1.7 million victims of war and sexual violence around the world.

The Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) launched the global appeal for the money on Wednesday in The Hague. They argued that the funds would support programmes for "communities most affected by situations where the ICC is operating."

According to TFV board chairman Simone Veil, the programmes would benefit Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic and Darfur in Sudan.

"Women and girls are most often the victims of war and that is why TFV believes those under the jurisdiction of the ICC is necessary," Veil said.

At least 34 projects have been approved and will be implemented in northern Uganda and Congo before the end of the year, according to an ICC statement. The compensation will take the form of resettlement packages.
