12 September 2008

Thieves have broken into Arua Referral Hospital laboratory and stolen two microscopes. The acting Medical Superintendent, Dr Alex Adaku, confirmed the theft yesterday."It is unfortunate for the hospital to lose these machines," Dr Adaku said.

The officer in charge of criminal investigation department, Mr Romano Okuja, said four hospital workers have been arrested and detained at the central police station in connection with the theft. They include two nurses and two guards.

"We are detaining them for interrogation but if found guilty during court trial then they will face the law," Mr Okuja said.

In June, thieves stole the only ultrasound machine at hospital. The machine is valued at Shs50 million.

Daily Monitor has learnt that the machines at the hospital are not labelled making it hard for the police to trace them. According to the police, one microscope has been recovered from a casual labourer.
