Ghana: Kumasi to Get First Journalism University

11 September 2008

Kumasi — The Director of Studies at the Institute of Business Management and Journalism (IBM&J), the only accredited private journalism school based in Kumasi, Mr. Philip Owusu, has hinted that his administration was working around the clock, to upgrade the school to university status, to serve the manpower needs of industries in the northern sector of the country.

He said after training over 3,000 students, who are working at the various media houses and companies as journalists and market executives, the time had come for the school to move from institute level to that of a university.

Mr. Owusu was speaking at the 26th Matriculation ceremony of the Institute in Kumasi recently, where 80 fresh students, out 250 applicants, were admitted into the school.

According to the Director, in an attempt to fulfil the dream of turning the institute into university, the school management had acquired a 9.05-acre land, at Ofoase Kokoben on the Kumasi-Obuasi road, for development to accommodate the various faculties.

He revealed that the school had opened a radio station in Kumasi, to help train their students in broadcast journalism.

Mr. P. F. Owusu praised the media for helping to nurture our democracy, and called for responsible reportage in this electioneering period, to ensure peace in the country.

Mr. Saeed Yakubu, News Editor of Luv FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, noted that many radio stations employed untrained journalists and radio presenters.

This, he noted, had resulted in unprofessional ethics being exhibited on the airwaves and the newspapers, by these so-called journalists.

He urged the students to be circumspect in their writing, when they come out, to avoid any legal suits.

Saeed made reference to a research conducted by the Media Commission, which revealed that radio stations in Kumasi devoted 70% of their airtime to politics and superstition, and advised the students to desist from such practices, by devoting equal attention to all the sectors that would help move Ghana forward.

The IBM&J was established in 1990, and currently has student population of 660.
