Nigeria: Bayelsa - Legislators Size Up Nominees

Lagos — When the Bayelsa State House of Assembly through the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Communication, Hon. Robert Enogha, said they would carry out a rigorous screening of the list of commissioner nominees forwarded to it by Governor Timipre Sylva a fortnight ago, some people took the assertion with a pinch of salt.

In fact, some critics and residents alike had jumped to conclusion that the exercise would be another charade by the legislative arm of government to possibly check the executive, especially in view of the fact that most state Houses have been mere appendages of the executive. To put it succinctly, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has been regarded as a sleeping dog since the predominantly riverine state was created on October 1, 1996.
