BENIN-Five people including the newly appointed branch manager for Bank PHB at the bank's new branch in Igarra, Akoko-Edo local government area, a pregnant woman with two of her kids and another lady lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident on the Benin / Auchi road.
Identified as Mr.John Adumaza, the bank manager was said to be driving in his official vehicle along with the two women and two kids when he had a head-on collision with an on coming trailer near Iruekpen in Esan West Local government area of Edo state.
The heavily pregnant woman who was identified as Mrs Abiye Oseh lost her two kids. The name of the fifth occupant was given as Gina Gomina.
The bank manager it was gathered just resumed work as manager of the branch of the bank in Igarra, about a week ago and he was driving in his official car, a Toyota Corolla, with registration number EX 626 LND, when it collided with a trailer with registration no. AX 810 Ben.
The Zonal Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Commission in Benin, Zakari Ndah, who confirmed the unfortunate incident when contacted on the telephone yesterday, said that the accident occurred around 10.30 a.m.
He attributed the cause of the accident to dangerous overtaking on the part of the driver of the Toyota Corolla just aas he disclosed that two other passengers sustained injuries from the accident while the dead were deposited at the mortuary in Irua Specialist Hospital.
This accident came on the heels of campaigns by the leadership of the FRSC against cases of overloading especially by commercial vehicles.
Head of Legal Services Department of the commission, Mr. Chidi Nwachukwu, who represented the Corp Marshal, Mr. Osita Chidoka when he flagged off the campaign on Thursday in Benin said the commission would prosecute culprits.
He said the commission would henceforth impound overloaded vehicles adding that passengers should also be ready to share from the penalty as no alternative arrangement would be made for them whenever such overloaded vehicles were impounded by them. This, he said would discourage both passengers and drivers from continuing in the act.
According to him, the commission would also impose a fine of N10,000 on errant drivers and they would also be prosecuted in mobile courts.He also said they would contact the National Assembly to enact laws that would treat such offenders as ex-convicts and that would bar them from elective positions in the country.
