Kampala — The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) saga has refused to go away. Taking twists and turns daily, it is threatening to pile up as a bulwark against Amama Mbabazi.
His explanation that his dealing with NSSF were purely business - willing seller, willing buyer - has not calmed the prodding of the issue. This has raised speculation that his political foes are riding on the saga to end his political life.
Mbabazi and his business partner sold land to NSSF at sh24m per acre, sh10m above what was recommended by a valuer.
Insiders say opinion is divided in interpreting the deal. Those who have always regarded Mbabazi as a super minister and a corrupt-free politician are taking advantage of the saga to soil his name. While others who reckon he is an asset to the party as a strategic thinker, are fighting for him.
In the end it will be about numbers. NRM legislators are whispering that if the majority thinks his dealings could harm the party, then his options will inevitably narrow to an exit.
