Kenya: ODM Steps Up Campaign for Sotik

Nairobi — Campaigns for the Sotik parliamentary seat intensified at the weekend as Rift Valley MPs pitched tent in the constituency to drum up support for ODM candidate Dr Joyce Cherono Laboso.

Warned voters

The MPs, who included Energy assistant minister Charles Keter, Joshua Kutuny (Cheranganyi), Magerer Langat (Kipkelion) and Bureti's Franklin Bett warned voters to be wary of leaders urging them to support parties that did not have any support in the region and urged the community to stick to ODM.

The by-election, to be held on September 25, has attracted 12 candidates.

The MPs announced that ODM leaders led by Prime Minister Raila Odinga would, from Tuesday, set up camp in Sotik and Bomet to ensure that the party retained the seats left vacant by the deaths of Roads minister Kipkalya Kones and Assistant Home Affairs minister Lorna Laboso.

"The Kalenjin community should vote in Dr Laboso by a landslide as a sign of respect for our departed assistant minister," they said.

Speaking at rallies at Chebole, Soymet and Kaptendundo trading centres, the MPs said Dr Laboso would complete development projects initiated by her sister.

Mr Keter said the Government will spend Sh18 million to bring power to Mtarakwa in Sotik District.

Marital status

He said claims that Kalenjin MPs were divided over the Mau issue were inaccurate and the MPs would go to the Mau region after the by-election to solve the problem. He assured settlers that no one would be evicted.

Aspiring MP, Dr Laboso promised to complete her sister's projects and start more.

She said people should not be concerned about her martial status as that was her private life.
