Nigeria: Kogi Pledges Free Medicare for Mothers

Kogi State government has granted free medical treatment for nursing mothers and their children in the state with immediate effect.

Governor Ibrahim Idris announced this when he received in audience the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Saidatu Usman who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Lokoja.

He promised that the state would partner with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in improving the well-being of women, children and the disabled in the state.

The governor expressed delight that the people of the state have been living up to their responsibilities of giving sound education to their children as well as enabling environment that would make them useful citizens.

Governor Idris assured that his administration would not relent in curbing the cases of women trafficking and child abuse in the state, stressing that as the leaders of tomorrow as well as the conscience of the society, children needs to be adequately catered to.

He intimated the minister that the bill for the child rights act has already been forwarded to the state house of Assembly for passage into law as part of his administration's effort to give children in the state, a sense of belonging.

The governor then advised parents in the state to take good care of their children as it is obligatory that they must give them the best to enable them live worthy lives in the society.

Earlier, the minister of Women Affairs and Social Development Hajia Saidatu Usman informed Governor Idris that she was on an advocacy visit to seek co-operation with his government on how best to tackle the problem of Women, Children and the disabled in the state.

She lamented the high rate of maternal mortality across the country and called on the 36 governors in the federation to address the problem with dispatch.

Hajia Usman commended Governor Idris for being gender sensitive in all his dealings in the state, explaining that women constituted 75% of the populace and deserved to be given equal rights in the society.
