Kenya: ID Cards Blamed for Fanning Tribalism

15 September 2008

Nairobi — Efforts by the Government to rid the country of tribalism have failed, says the report that also quotes the public as blaming ID cards for promoting tribalism.

The public perception is that the level of tribalism has shot up alarmingly.

The "Citizens' views on the performance of the Government and local authorities" report says that perceptions of ethnic considerations in job opportunities rose to 67 per cent this year compared to 31 per cent last year.

Although many viewed an ID card as an important document, they said it was being used to discriminate against individuals from certain communities. "Most of the citizens felt that ID cards greatly contribute to tribal promotions and indiscriminate victimisation."
