Nigeria: Cyber Crime - Software Expert Canvasses Cyber Security Harmonisation

Lagos — Chief Software Architect, Amos Emmanuel of Programos Software, a leading indigenous software developer, has called for the harmonisation of cyber security reforms in both the public and private sector in furtherance of efforts to curb the growing menace of cybercrime in the country.

According to the Programos boss, "for business continuity of the nation's financial sector not to be jeopardised by the threats of Cyber crimes currently looming, it is necessary stakeholders become more sensitive to security techniques and measures which will not only monitor physical crimes but computer-aided/internet crimes popularly tagged cyber crime".

Emmanuel, in a statement made available to IT world at the weekend, said that by the streamlining of efforts of both the private and public sector, Nigeria would be better positioned to combat cybercrime while saving resources and boosting economic activities.

He argued that since cyber crime is inevitable in the light of the growing adoption and deployment of IT in various sectors of the economy, there is an urgent need for appropriate reviews of the laws of the land to cover cyber crime identification, and disciplinary enforcement in respect of crimes over the internet as have been done for physical crimes.

He stated that this is expected to factor in all specific and peculiar societal challenges that could threaten the survival of the nation's systems particularly of the financial sector.

The IT enthusiast contended that the financial institutions must boost their internal controls compliance and anti-fraud framework.
