Nigeria: Agency Advocates Consumer Rights for Youths

16 September 2008

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has said that youths must be empowered with the requisite knowledge on consumer rights, to enable them play the role of informed consumers.

Mrs Ify Umenyi, the director-general, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja that the council had taken necessary measures to create awareness on consumer rights.

"Appreciable success has been made to make the people understand their rights as consumers.

"This has become necessary, because the negative aspects of today's 'consumerism' promotes unsustainable consumption patterns," she said.

Umenyi noted that youths worldwide, were not only agents of social change but also a strong factor in the consumption pattern of the homes.

"More attention should be directed to them, with a view to catching them young,"she added.

Umenyi said the council's youth empowerment programme, tagged "learning for life," was a life-long consumer education learning process.

She said the programme would be conducted in about 801 secondary schools, in the six geo-political zones.

The project, the director-general noted, was tailored to blend theoretical knowledge with attitude for proactive actions and behaviours.
