Nigeria: State to Sack Erring Govt Doctors

The Akwa Ibom State Government has warned that beginning from January next year, doctors and other medical personnel in its employ who engage in private practice shall face summary dismissal.

The commissioner for information and Social Re-Orientation, Mr. Aniekan Umanah said in Uyo that the State Executive Council had approved the employment of 30 consultants as well as new nurses to beef up manpower in hospitals in the state.

The information boss said the executive also approved the acquisition of about 160 new vehicles for medical doctors in the state and added that capacity building exercises will be carried out for all categories of workers.

In the area of education, the Commissioner said the executive council also formally approved and adopted free education scheme in the state and said it was geared towards ensuring a compulsory education for all children from the state from primary one to senior secondary three from September 8 this year.

To ensure effective take off of the scheme, he said government has approved total rehabilitation in at least two schools each in all the 31 local government areas in the state.

Under the arrangement, he stated that government plans to provide generating plants, install pipe borne water system, dinning halls, perimeter fence and other boarding facilities, security, common rooms for relaxation, staff quarters, buses and to subsidize accommodation charges in the schools.

Mr. Umanah also announced the signing of a contract for the construction of a modern Tropicana Entertainment center with a dome, theme park, a galleria with six cinema halls, a five star hotel and a shopping mall.

He also briefed newsmen on other major decisions taken by the government for major infrastructural turnaround.
