Nigeria: Man Arraigned Over Car Theft

One Ifeanyi Orji, 33, has been arraigned before Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate's Court sitting at Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, for an alleged joint act and theft of a Peugeot 504 car with registration number AE 602 KUJ, belonging to NICON Insurance Plc, Abuja.

According to police report, the offences ran contrary to sections 97 and 287 of the penal code law. The report stated that on September 3, 2008, one Tola Davou Sallau of NICON Insurance Plc, NICON Plaza, Abuja, and Kasimu Abdullahi of the same address, came to Wuse police station and reported that in June 2006, the said vehicle Best Line, was stolen by an unknown person.

And that on September 3, 2008, the number plate of the vehicle was seen on one Gulf car driven by one Christopher Ude.

When Christopher Ude was quizzed, he confessed that the accused, Ifeanyi, Orji, gave him the number plate. Moreover, during police investigation, the accused confessed to have bought the vehicle from "their transport officer", Mr Basil A Basil (now late, though his death was in dispute.

Before Magistrate Sharon Ishaya, the accused denied the allegation of joint act and theft against him. He was granted bail by the magistrate in the sum of N100, 000 and two sureties

Hearing on the case was adjourned to September 18, 2008.
