Ghana: Ho Health Insurance Scheme Intensifies Educational Programme

Samuel Agbewode

16 September 2008

Ho — The management, of the Ho Municipal Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has intensified its educational activities to increase the membership of the scheme, particularly as the chiefs and people of Asogli are preparing to celebrate their annual Yam Festival, with the opening of 22 new registration centres in the municipality.

The management of the scheme observed that more people registered during the Yam Festival, hence their decision to take advantage and organise a membership-drive programme in the municipality.

The Scheme Manager of the Ho NHIS, Mr. Prosper Pi-Bansah, made this known when the Management donated 100 T-shirts, specially made to promote activities of the NHIS in the area, to the Asogli Yam Festival Planning Committee, and a cash of GH¢800.

Presenting the items, Mr. Pi-Bansah said the gesture formed part of the social responsibility to the people in the community where the Scheme operates, noting that the donation was a long term investment, and should not be seen as a mere donation to the Asogli people, since the move was strategic to the growth and development of the scheme.

He explained that a similar donation made towards the festival last year, yielded positive results, as 18,000 people were registered under the scheme during the festivities, through a well-designed programme, in collaboration with the Planning Committee of the festival.

Mr. Pi-Bansah disclosed that so far management of the scheme had paid GH¢1,600 to card bearing people, who were treated free at the various health facilities in the municipality, adding that people should realise that sound health was key to wealth creation, as free medical services would help people who would not have money to attend hospital, and so they should do so without fear.

The Scheme Manager used the opportunity, and appealed to the chiefs and people of Asogli, to educate their subjects on the importance of the scheme, so as to enable them to register to derive the needed benefit, which he observed, would definitely improve their health status.

Receiving the items, the Vice Chairman of the Asogli Yam Festival Planning Committee, Mr. David Bansah, thanked the management of the Ho Municipal Scheme for the gesture, and said it would not only promote activities of the scheme, but enhance the organisation and celebration of the festival.

He noted that the management of the scheme, continued to support the Asogli Traditional Council during its annual Yam Festival, adding that such efforts were highly appreciated by the council, and said the council would also play its role to ensure that more people registered under the scheme.

Mr. Bansah lauded the activities of the scheme, to freely register the aged in the municipality, a move he said, clearly demonstrated concern for the elderly in the society, and urged other organisations to emulate the management of the NHIS, in order to ensure accelerated development.
