Pretoria — The Tshwane Executive Mayor, Gwen Ramokgopa, and council members on Wednesday took part in a cleaning operation at the Riverside Heights Flats in Eersterust.

The smartly dressed Mayor and her council members swopped their fancy clothes with overalls and hand gloves showing local residents that they were indeed servants of the people.

Hard at work, Mayor Ramokgopa told BuaNews that the cleaning operation was part of the council's routine work and it would continue to other parts of the city.

"There was a need for residents to change their behaviour and stop dumping dirt everywhere.

"People should take ownership of their environment, keep it clean at all the times, they should stop littering," she said.

Member of the Mayoral Committee, Absalom Ditshoke also encouraged communities in other parts of the city to start their own cleaning operations, adding that the council would help them where possible.

"We are always prepared to help," he said.

The cleaning operation took many by surprise, with many residents commending the move, saying it should be held more often.

One of the residents, Annamarie Stuurman told BuaNews that she appreciated the initiative as it shows that their leaders care about them.

"This must also be done to other areas. It is now up to us as residents to keep the place clean," Ms Stuurman said.
