About N1 billion has been earmarked for the implementation of free education in Niger State this fiscal year.
The Permanent Secretary for Basic Education in the state, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Minna yesterday, said this includes a comprehensive free education for the girl- child from primary school to tertiary institution. Mohammed explained that under the scheme, all female pupils and students would be provided with free uniform, free text books and feeding.
He said the free education for boys only covers basic with the provision of free text books and feeding while the parents are expected to provide the uniforms.
The permanent secretary disclosed that 54,410 students were registered into the junior secondary schools in the state this academic session while 36,967 were placed in the senior secondary schools.
Mohammed explained that 1,400 students had been registered into the necessities teachers training colleges that are expected to commence academic work next month, stating that graduates of the teaching colleges would be engaged by the state government as auxiliary teachers.
According to him, 1,598 fresh students were enrolled into the 15 Arabic and Islamic colleges across the state. The permanent secretary also disclosed that 187 students from the state are beneficiaries of the revived exchange programme to other 18 Northern states. Mohammed stated that 327 exchange students are also expected in Niger State from other states in the North.
He explained that the state government had abolished all forms of levies in schools, and warned headmasters and principals against such illegal levies.
