Monrovia — The Government of Liberia says it welcomes the news of the signing of the Zimbabwe Global Agreement by political leaders of Zimbabwe.
The government congratulates President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and leaders of the MDC, Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai and Mr. Arthur Mutambara for this historic pact.
According to Foreign Ministry release, the Liberian Government also expressed gratitude to President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and SADC facilitators, the African Union and others who played important roles negotiating the Agreement.
The Government of Liberia says the Agreement is not only a victory for the people of Zimbabwe who have suffered so much as a result of the crisis, but also a victory for African diplomacy.
"This decision demonstrates the strong determination of the people of Zimbabwe to return their country to peace and democracy, which are crucial to building a prosperous and functioning state," the Foreign Ministry release said.
The Liberian government urged all sides to honor the terms of the Agreement which calls for power-sharing between the three parties and restoration of economic stability and growth.
"The Government and people of Liberia stand by the people of Zimbabwe as they begin the awesome task of national healing and reconciliation," the release concluded.
