Awka — The United States of America is to assist Anambra State in the area of micro credit, micro finance, educational exchange and trading within the mechanisms of African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the US ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Robin Renee Sanders, has said.
Exchanging views with Governor Peter Obi at the Government House, Awka, the Ambassador said she recognized the entrepre-neurship of the people of Anambra State, adding that with such spirit, the people were naturally good for micro credit support.
She commended the governor for his efforts in the building of infrastructure and education, as well as his commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
She said that the embassy might organize a seminar in Anambra on AGOA so as to expose the people on the opportunities existing in the trade and other areas.
Governor Obi, in his response, said his adminis-tration was delighted to play host to the US Ambassador and thanked the USA for extending hands of friendship and cooperation to the state.
The governor acknow-ledged the fact that the state is not where it is supposed to be as a result of the problems of the past. He promised, however, that his adminis-tration was committed to taking it to where it is supposed to be through aggressive and integrated development of all sectors.
He said that the state was ready with the modalities for assistance in the area of micro credit, as it already had a team on the scheme, headed by the Commissioner for Finance, which is targeted at the poor.
