Mobile Telecommunication (MTC) decided to improve Namibian education and foster the development of information and communication technology (ICT) skills by donating 1 000 computers to about 1 000 primary schools.
MTC also invested N$10 million to sell laptops with broadband connectivity at a subsidised price to the University of Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia.
The price of the subsidised laptops is not yet determined.
The computers are imported from Portugal and 10 schools on Wednesday signed the agreement with MTC and received their laptops.
Portugal Telecom's Chief Executive Officer, Zeinal Bava Presuntud, said MTC will start an e-schools programme in the country with an unmatched market offer of subsidising bundling of personal computers and mobile broadband.
Portugal Telecom has shares in MTC.
"This is a big step towards the right direction.
We hope the programme will be a success which will depend on the how the beneficiaries utilise the programme," he said.
He said 300 primary schools will also be awarded with new power generators in order to have access to the offer as well.
"Up to 25 000 tertiary institutions students should be involved in the more than N$10 million programme," he added.
