Kenya: Kalonzo Backs Move to Protect Water Sources

James Kariuki

19 September 2008

Nairobi — Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka on Friday supported the conservation of all water catchment areas.

This, he said, was the only way of fighting desertification which threatens the country. The VP said Lake Olbolosot conservation area in Nyandarua North district should be given a priority.

Mr Musyoka spoke during a thanksgiving-cum education day at the Ol-Kalou stadium. He told the area MP Erastus Mureithi to lead the initiative of re-planting trees at the conservation area.

MPs David Ngugi (Kinangop), Ephraim Maina (Mathira) and Johnstone Muthama (Kangundo) repeated calls that perpetrators of the post-election violence should face the law.

The Government was asked to consider resettling squatters from Mt Kenya and the Aberdares to get rid of slums in the urban areas.
