Culture, illiteracy and the remoteness of Nakapiripit District has forced the majority of expectant mothers to deliver from home, with the assistance of untrained traditional birth attendants.
The latest District Health Sector Report that was released by Dr John Anguzi, shows that 98 percent of expectant mothers in the district don't visit health centres for medical attention by trained medical personnel.
"Because of these factors you don't have to get surprised that there are health units here that have not registered any deliveries throughout the year," Dr Anguzi, the district health officer said..
This means that only two percent of expectant mothers give birth in the health centres or dispensaries under the help and supervision of the qualified medical personnel. Dr Anguzi said on Thursday that although most people in the district are shunning health centres, even medical personnel don't want to serve in the area. He said his department has only 35 percent of the established medical staff posts filled.
