Rwanda: Elections - Milestone in Country's History

21 September 2008

opinion

Kigali — The just concluded parliamentary election process has been hailed by different observers as having been orderly.

More so, observers like those from the Common Market of East and Central Africa (COMESA), noted that there are several lessons to learn from the Rwanda elections.

A number of achievements registered in Rwanda, are worth emulating by the other members of COMESA. This was noted by the COMESA observer team. They gave examples of special seats for hitherto marginalized groups like women and the disabled.

Before that, the European Union observer mission to Rwanda also commended the National Electoral commission for a job well done. We realize that as a young democracy, we have made giant strides in areas of governance and democratic accountability.

It is telling that a young democracy that emerged from conflict and Genocide just over a decade ago has been able to achieve so much in a relatively short period of time. Many in the population have to be reminded that the efforts that have been invested in realising all these achievements have to be stepped up.

Achievement is no reason for complacency. Having achieved a lot, many at times tend to relax. This is something Rwandans can not afford. There are still many challenges like realising development targets.

Fortunately, the country is under a good and committed leadership. So the population has to work hard with the confidence that, we will achieve what we set out to achieve as a nation given the commitment of our leadership.
