Port Harcourt — The Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) has elected a new national executive to administer affairs of the party and amended its constitution at a convention held in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking after his election, the new national chairman of the party, Mr. Soloman Edebiri said the new national executive would rebuild the party structures from the grassroot level and improve membership throughout the states.
Mr. Edebiri said the PPP must begin to play a more active role in the affairs of the country by taking up the challenge of ensuring good governance in Nigeria.
"We must begin to present ourselves to the people as the true alternative government in Nigeria. The current political setting doesn't give any one confidence to want to be in active politics", he said.
The PPP national chairman therefore tasked President Umaru Yar'Adua to urgently review the nation's electoral process, adding that the current process only spells doom for the country.
"The present administration must take decisive steps to review this process in order to give hope to the common people. If this is not done, I am afraid we might be heading for a one party state," he added.
