Windhoek — The Congress of Democrats (CoD) will hold its extra-ordinary congress from October 24 to 26, 2008 outside Windhoek despite newspaper reports that the party is broke.
The National Chairperson of CoD Tsudao Gurirab told New Era that the party has enough funds to host the extra-ordinary congress as ordered by the High Court, and preparations are on course.
Gurirab said preparations are in full swing. Last week Thursday, the party's Vice-President Nora Schimming-Chase, the administrator at the CoD head office Jeptha Tjongoro and Gurirab reviewed the on-going preparations for the congress.
Gurirab denied reports that the congress is off and said such falsehoods spread by anyone are not only delusional but a continuation of concerted efforts aimed at destroying the party, which started shortly before the Keetmanshoop Congress and continue unabated.
The troubled party, which is split into two factions, has been trying to unite especially at the leadership level and since the court order has held three leadership meetings.
With both factions facing huge legal bills following their protracted court battles, finance has become a hot topic.
Schimming-Chase has requested the party leadership, under Ben Ulenga, which was in charge of the party affairs, to provide financial reports.
Schimming-Chase also requested that the party settles the bill of the former applicants but her demand was not approved. The party informed her that she should not confuse the cost order made by the High Court and the costs that will be settled as soon as the former respondents are presented with the accounts.
The leadership meeting agreed that a financial report for the period of May 7 2007 to the present should be compiled and presented to the leadership.
Gurirab said with less than six weeks before the congress, there is no place for factional theatrics and encouraged all aspirants to the party leadership to go out and campaign among members.
The extra-ordinary congress presents the troubled party with an opportunity to redeem itself and unite before the national assembly and presidential elections next year.
