Tororo — At least 1,200 children have been delivered by one of Tororo's celebrated traditional birth attendant (TBA) in the last five years.
Ms Erina Nasimiyu, now in her late 60s and a resident of Amgoro B Parish in Tororo Municipality, has been in the practice for over 35 years and is known in the district for assisting mothers who cannot afford hospital bills.
She has undergone a number of training programmes by the Ministry of Health and has certificates of practice as a traditional birth attendant. She told Daily Monitor at her home on September 19 that on average, 20 women deliver at home each month. And that out of the 20 women at least one of them delivers twins.
Ms Nasimiyu is keen on keeping records of all women she helps deliver. And from her records, atleast 72 sets of twins have been delivered in the last five years. She has in the same period delivered six sets of triplets.
"Women come here from different districts of the eastern region and western Kenya as far as Bungoma, Eldoret, Busia, Kisumu and Kitale among others," she said.
Ms Nasimiyu is also believed to be talented in her work, especially turning babies in the womb that some of the cases she helps deliver are the very complicated ones who could only be waiting for operation in hospital. "Some women escape from hospital and come here for assistance," she said.
recommended an operation when the position of the baby is difficult to change and when they come here, I easily do it and deliver them normally," she said.
