Rep. Donald M. Payne (Democrat-New Jersey) is hosting an annual forum examining U.S-Africa policy on Friday, September 26 with a line-up of speakers headed by Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the current chair of the African Union, and Jean Ping, who chairs the African Union Commission (secretariat).
Other participants include U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte; Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian Finance Minister who is currently managing director of the World Bank, Dr. Witney Schneidman, Africa policy adviser to Democratic Presidential nominee Barrack Obama; Angelique Kidjo, a Grammy-winning singer and song-writer from Benin; and Nicole C. Lee, executive director of TransAfrica Forum.
The forum will take place from 9:00-1:00 on Friday in Room 207 B of the Washington Convention Center (801 Mount Vernon Place N.W., Washington, DC 20001).
The panel is part of a series of round tables and discussions held each year during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Legislative Conference. Payne, who is widely regarded as the Caucus 'point-person' on Africa, chairs the House Subcommittee on Africa and Human Rights. He is serving his ninth term representing New Jersey's 10th Congressional district.
