Nigeria: FG to Split Education Ministry Into Two - Aja-Nwachukwu

23 September 2008

The Federal Ministry of Education is to be restructured into two sections with focus on Tertiary and Secondary/ Basic Education, the Minister of Education, Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu has said.

Aja-Nwachukwu dropped the hint yesterday in Abuja at a meeting with the visiting Senior Manager of the World Bank, Mrs Lynne Sherburne-Benz.

He said that the two emerging departments would be headed by a minister. The minister called on the bank to assist and support the ministry as it re-organises and strategises on its programmes for better performance in future.

"We need to refocus tertiary education for the training of highly skilled manpower to drive the economic development of the country.

"We also need a strong strategy document to drive the primary and secondary education to achieve the twin goals of 'Education For All' and the Millennium Development Goals," he stressed.

In her contribution, the Minister of State for Education, Hajia Ai'sha Dukku, stressed the need for more World Bank support for basic education in the country.

In her remarks, the World Bank senior manager, Sherbourne-Benz, assured the ministers of the bank's readiness to assist in the development of the sector. She said that the bank would provide technical support and input in the development of strategic documents to drive the sector from the basic to tertiary levels.

"This is important because the bank is taking a wholistic view of the development of the sector because education is fundamental to the successes in the other sectors of the economy," she said. (NAN)
