News Agency of Nigeria

24 September 2008

Nigeria exported shrimps worth more than 65 million dollars (about N7.6 billion) in 2006, Mr Bamidele Dada, the former Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, has said.

Dada told newsmen yesterday in Abuja that the country also exported ornamental fish and added that Nigerian shrimps were in high demand in Europe and America.

He also disclosed that revenue from the fishery sub-sector would have risen sharply as some neighbouring countries including Chad , Benin Republic and Cameroon depended on the country's products.

The former minister stressed the need to boost fish production to meet the protein need of the population.

He said:"There is a gap between supply and demand so we need to double our effort in marine production as well as in fish farming.

"The recent development in both marine and aqua- culture will enhance the target date set by Mr President to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production by 2020."

Dada urged the Federal Government to implement the recommendations by the presidential committee on curbing piracy in the fishery industry.( NAN ).
