Luanda — Health authorities will hold from September 26 to 28, a sub-cycle of vaccination against poliomyelitis in some provinces of the country, to curb the spread of the wild poliovirus of the type III.
The head of department of the Broad Vaccination Programme, Alda Morais, this Tuesday said that from January to July this year, 25 cases of infection by the type III wild poliovirus were detected in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela and Kwanza Sul, and, therefore, authorities decided to hold a sub-cycle in these regions.
Some provinces such as Moxico, Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul, will also be included in this sub-cycle due to the nearness with the aforementioned regions.
She added that the campaign foresees to vaccinate nearly 3.5 million children below the age of five.
On the other hand, Alda Morais added that the second phase of the national vaccination campaign will be held countrywide on October 24, 25 and 26, and over six million children are expected to be immunised. The first phase happened last July.
