Nigeria: UN Meeting On Bakassi Put Off

24 September 2008

The United Nations (UN) has announced the postponement of a high-level meeting between President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and his Cameroonian counterpart, Paul Biya, on Bakassi.

UN spokesperson, Michele Montas, told UN reporters that the postponement was because "the President of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, will not be attending this year's ordinary session of the General Assembly".

She said the high-level meeting on the Bakassi Peninsula between the leaders, initially scheduled for Monday afternoon, will not take place, adding that Ban was informed at the weekend of the inability of President Yar'Adua to attend this year's general assembly.

Montas added that the Secretary-General had intended to use the meeting to congratulate the Nigerian and Cameroonian leaders on the final conclusion of the Bakassi agreement.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, is leading a high- powered Nigerian delegation to the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly.

On the delegation is the Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, who will also participate in the signing of some multilateral treaties.

NAN reports that Maduekwe and Aondoakaa will be taking part in the annual treaty event holding between September 23 and 25, as well as from September 29 and October 1 at the UN secretariat.

The foreign minister, who is expected to deliver the president's address at the general assembly's debate, will also attend other events on the assembly's sidelines.(NAN)
