At least 142 fake boats and 187 illegal fishing nets worth over Shs400m have been impounded and destroyed by the Beach Management Unit operatives of Kayanja Beach on the shores of Lake Victoria in Mayuge.
The operation was conducted last weekend a round Kayanja, Kabuka, Nambaga and Wembe beaches in Malongo Sub County.
Beach management Chairman Joseph Eima said the crackdown was mounted in an effort to end the ongoing illegal fishing that has ad reduced the quantity of fish in the lake and also vandalising the fish breeding grounds and killing the young fish. "We shall continue to hunt down the wrong people because we must make sure only mature fish is harvested," he said.
