Kampala — To combat the depletion of fish, fisheries departments are involving fishermen on Lake Victoria in self-policing.
Christopher Kyeyune, a fisheries officer, Makindye Division in Kampala, says the strategy also involves telling fishermen about the importance of fish.
Kyeyune who was addressing fishermen at Ggaba landing site recently, said the fish shortage is caused by the use of under-sized nets.
"We are registering boats at landing sites to get the details of their fishing gears," said Kyeyune. Fifty-six boats at Ggaba have been registered.
However, Kyeyune decried limited manpower to handle the fishermen involved in illegal fishing because they are many and are usually violent.
