Ghana/Lesotho: Yeboah Ineligible

25 September 2008

ASEC Abidjan goalkeeper Daniel Yeboah will not be called up by Milovan Rajevac for the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho because he is ineligible to play for Ghana.

The 23-year old with Ghanaian lineage has represented neighbours Cote d'Ivoire at U-20 level and is well passed the 21-year-old age limit that FIFA has set for players who want to switch from one national team to the other.

News reports from the last two days have claimed the goalkeeper, who pulled some outstanding saves during ASEC's 2-2 draw against El-Ahly of Egypt in an African Champions League game last Sunday, is in Rajevac's plans for the game against Lesotho but KickOffGhana.com understands that will not happen.

The GFA confirmed they are aware the player is ineligible under FIFA rules.

Ghana managed to convince Quincy Owusu Abeyie to switch from Holland to Ghana but the Birmingham City player had made his application before he turned 21.

Yeboah was first choice goalkeeper for the Ivory Coast at the 2003 African U-20 Championships in Burkina Faso before going on to represent them at the world event in the United Arab Emirates that same year.
