Angola: Over Two Million People to Consume Drinking Water By 2012

25 September 2008

Lubango — At least 80 percent of the population of southern Huíla province might benefit from drinking water by 2012, in the framework of the "Water for All" programme, ANGOP learn this Thursday.

According to the provincial director of Energy and Water, Abel João da Costa, this programme, which started last June, will benefit the province's 14 districts.

He explained that in this first phase, set to end in October, the programme will cover the outskirts of Lubango district, Quipungo, Chibia and Gambos, as well as Uaba commune, Caconda district.

The programme is estimated at USD 4.1 million and will be spent on the construction of 50 new underground water abstraction systems, through gravity and pumping, noted the official, who added that the government is committed to the population's wellbeing.

Abel João da Costa informed that expanding the programme to other districts depends on the availability of money, since the first phase was meant to spend USD 20 million, but only 20 percent was made available.

The "Water for All" programme is a presidential initiative and in Huíla province it will benefit over people, mainly those in peripheral areas.
