Uganda: Mother Saved From Witchcraft Shrine

25 September 2008

Kampala — A 20-year-old pregnant woman survived death after she went to deliver in a traditional shrine. Juliet Nakazibwe was saved by the leaders of traditional healers in Kayunga district on Tuesday.

She was found in a shrine belonging to James Mulumba and Siraje Kiyemba, residents of Kisombwa village.

Nakazibwe was believed to have stayed in the shrine for three days and could neither speak nor walk without being supported.

Ssemisambwa, who led the search, said the two men conned the woman of sh10,000, a goat and a cock promising to help her deliver well. He said regular operations would be carried out to net those who impersonate traditional healers and extort money among other things from the public.

The men were arrested and Nakazibwe rushed to Kayunga Hospital in critical condition.
