Kenya: Pupils' Bodies Retrieved From River Tana

Nairobi — The bodies of four pupils who drowned were recovered from River Tana in Garissa District on Friday.

Reports from the Kenya Red Cross indicated that the four from Abadgera Primary School, and aged between 10 and 11 years, were in a group of eight people who were fetching water from the river.

According to the organisation's communications officer Titus Mung'ou, a mother and two children survived the 6pm incident.

In Mombasa, one person died while two others escaped death narrowly in two separate incidents.

A pick-up driver died when his vehicle collided with a lorry on Thursday night at Mshomoroni.

Hurtled into sea

In the second incident, a truck driver and his loader jumped out of their vehicle as it hurtled into the sea after failing to climb the Likoni ferry ramp.

In Busia, a seven-year-old boy died on the spot after a speeding lorry knocked him down at Murumba on the Butula-Mumias road.

Busia police boss Paul Kariuki said that Marcilline Odhiambo, was crossing the road when the lorry hit him.

In Lodwar, a five-month-old toddler died on the spot yesterday as four other people were injured critically when a vehicle they were travelling in rolled.

The accident occurred on Friday at 3am along the Lodwar-Kitale highway at Nakwei area in Turkana Central District.

A witness said that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and rolled several times.

The injured are admitted to Lodwar District Hospital while the baby's body was moved to the hospital's mortuary.
