Kickoff (Cape Town)
28 September 2008
Round three of the National First Division produced some significant results with Mpumalanga Black Aces shooting to the top of the Inland Stream after recording a 1-0 win over Black Leopards, and bottom-of-the-log Witbank Spurs defeating high-flying Winners Park 2-1.
Most of this weekend's matches were played on Friday night when a great 75th minute free kick from Aces' Kanika Matondo was sufficient to topple Leopards at the Puma Stadium in Witbank.
At the same time in Polokwane, Spurs shocked unbeaten Park to pick up their first points of the season, while at the Absa Stadium in Pretoria, Steve Barker's Pretoria University managed to hold the mighty Jomo Cosmos to a 0-0 draw.
This result means that Cosmos have only notched five out of possible nine points, with the other former PSL side, Leopards, also finding the going tough after relegation - with only one win in three matches.
Moreover, last season's runners-up Dynamos are still pointless after their third loss in a row. Pat Malabela's side went down 3-2 to FC AK at Eldorado Park on Saturday.
In the Coastal Stream, Hanover Park continued their good form by picking up their second win on the trot. They defeated previously unbeaten African Warriors 2-0 at Vygieskraal thanks to goals from Bulelani Matross and Houston Hills, and now find themselves just a point behind leaders FC Cape Town, who played out a goalless draw with lowly Nathi Lions.
In another Western Cape/KZN clash, Durban Stars managed to put their first points on the board following a 2-2 draw against Vasco da Gama at Chatsworth. Stars, playing with ten men, equalized late in the second half.
Newly promoted Carara Kicks are now level on points with Hanover following their 1-0 win over Sergio dos Santos' Ikapa Sporting in Welkom.
