Acting President, Rupiah Banda, yesterday declared that the MMD is headed for victory in the forthcoming presidential elections.
Speaking to supporters after filing in his nomination papers before Chief Justice, Ernest Sakala, in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Banda who is MMD's presidential candidate promised to uphold democracy if he was elected president.
"Continue supporting the MMD because we are headed for victory and from here let's go back to our homes and campaign," he said amid jubilation by cadres.
He said he would dedicate his presidency to the people and ensure that their lives became even better.
Mr Banda said already the price of fuel and mealie meal had dropped, a situation that would continue under his leadership.
He said improving the people's lives would be the MMD's campaign message because the party was committed to the improvement of people's lives.
He also thanked MMD supporters for going to the Supreme Court in numbers to witness his filing in of nomination papers.
Mr Banda arrived at the Supreme Court around 10:30 hours aboard a Scania Marcopolo bus as cadres joined in escorting his motorcade while flashing the MMD's campaign symbol.
He was accompanied on the bus by MMD national secretary, Katele Kalumba, Home Affairs Minister, Ronnie Shikapwasha, Mines Minister, Kalombo Mwansa, Information and Broadcasting Service Minister, Mike Mulongoti, Southern Province Minister, Daniel Munkombwe, Justice Minister, George Kunda and others.
He took oath before High Court registrar, Mwamba Chanda and later presented his nomination papers before the Chief Justice.
His 200 supporters, who included Mr Mulongoti, Lieutenant General Shikapwasha, Dr Kalumba, Mr Munkombwe and Gender Minister, Patricia Mulasikwanda, were screened by Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officers.
Others were Works and Supply Minister, Kapembwa Simbao, Community Development Minister, Catherine Namugala, Education Minister, Geoffrey Lungwangwa, MMD spokesperson, Benny Tetamashimba, NEC members, Sebastian Kopulande and Jazzman Chikwakwa.
Mr Banda also paid the K20 million nomination fee.
In his declaration of assets and liabilities valued by Moores Rowland Chartered Accountants, Mr Banda declared his assets at a total value of K2.935 billion.
His properties include, Chasimpa farm in Chipata valued at K550 million, farm implements valued at K40 million and Chila road residence in Lusaka valued at K900 million.
Others are two properties in Chipata with a net value of K125 million each, an Isuzu Pick Up and a VX Toyota valued at K15 million and K30 million respectively.
Mr Banda also declared that he had shares in Chilanga Cement Plc, Zambian Breweries, Investrust Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Intermarket Bank with a total value of K1.150 billion.
He also declared that he had 100 per cent interest in Robert Hudson Limited of Ndola and Allenwest Limited of Kitwe although he had not received any dividends from both companies.
