Nigeria: Glover Bags CAHB First VP

28 September 2008

Nigeria's Dr. Lanre Glover has been elected the First Vice President of Confederation of Africa Hand-ball (CAHB) at the Confedera-tion's election held in Lagos on Saturday.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Glover, who earlier stepped down as presidential candidate, was until his new position the Second Vice President of CAHB.

He told NAN in a post-election interview that Nigeria would now be a major player in the CAHB's decision making process.

"This is good for Nigeria, it is important to have somebody to be part of decision-making body and politics of the game at the international level", Glover said.

He also frowned at the luke-warm attitude of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to-wards his candidacy.

"It is quite unfortunate that NSC did not show much interest in my candidacy, it is not me as Glover who will benefit from my victory, but Nigeria as nation.

"My membership of the executive will attract develop-ment to Nigeria in the areas of training of our coaches, referees and administrators.

"The new president was fully supported by his country both financially and morally. He was given $100,000 by his country and there was a heavy presence of his country's sports ministry officials", Glover said.

He urged the government to show more interest in the candi-dacy of any Nigerian contesting for a continental, regional or world post if the country inten-ded to be a major player in inter-national sports politics.
