Lagos — The results of the May/June 2008 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were released yesterday without the results of 74,956 candidates who are being investigated for alleged involvement in malpractice during the examination.
Head of Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Iyi Uwadiae who announced the results in Lagos said those candidates being investigated represented 5.47 per cent of the total number of 1,369,142 candidates who entered for the examination in Nigeria.
Uwadiae said the reports of the malpractice cases and their exhibits have been compiled for presentation to the Nigeria Examinations Committee of the council and that the committee's decisions would be communicated to the affected candidates through the schools that presented them for the examination in due course.
He said 1,136,387 candidates, representing 83 per cent, have their full results released, while 232,755 candidates, representing 17 per cent, have a few of their subjects still being processed, as various errors made by them are being corrected by the council.
"The candidates committed some of these errors at the registration stage, while some were committed during the conduct of the examination."
According to him, 188,442 candidates, representing 13.76 per cent, obtained credits and above in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects, among them were 100,338 (7.32 per cent) male candidates and 88,104 (6.43 per cent) female candidates.
Uwadiae said 91,609 (6.69 per cent) candidates were Science oriented, 28,898 (2.11 per cent) candidates, Social Science oriented, while 67,935 (4.96 per cent) candidates were Arts biased.
He advised candidates who did the examination to check their results on the council's result-checking website: www.waecdirect.org
